Lebendige Stadt modern und traditionsbewußt Die 1000 Jahre alte Stadt Steyr, die heute 43.000 Einwohner zählt, stieg durch den Eisenhandel zu einer der bedeutendsten Städte Österreichs auf. Die Bürger der Stadt setzten nicht nur Maßstäbe der Stadtbaukunst und kulturellen Schöpfertums: Ein Sohn Steyrs', Josef Werndl, gründete 1864 eine Waffenfabrik, die zu weltweiter Bedeutung aufstieg. Nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg wurde die Produktion auf Autos und später auf Traktoren und Lastwagen erweitert. Die Steyr-Daimler-Puch AG ist heute der dominierende Industriebetrieb der Stadt mit 10.000 Beschäftigten. Er setzt die große Tradition der Eisenverarbeitung fort und exportiert Qualitätsprodukte in alle Welt. Steyr ist es einerseits gelungen, seine Industrie- und Stadtentwicklung den modernen Erfordernissen anzupassen, gleichzeitig aber seine großartige Altstadt weitgehend unversehrt zu erhalten und mit pulsierendem Leben zu füllen. The thousand-year-old City of Steyr, now a place of 43.000 inhabitants, rose to be one of the most important cities of Austria through the growth of its iron trade. The city fathers not only laid down high Standards for the art of City building and cultural achievement: a son of Steyr, Josef Werndl, founded a weapons factory here in 1864 which soon achieved world-wide fame. After the First World War, the factory was enlarged and extended to produce automobiles, and later tractors and lorries were added to the production. The present Steyr-Daimier-Puch AG Company, with 10.000 employees, is now the predominant industrial concern in the city. This firm continues the grand tradition of fine iron and Steel Processing and now exports quality products around the world. Steyr has succeeded in meeting the needs of the present day in its industrial and urban development over the years, yet at the same time preserving its magnificent old town unharmed and still pulsating with life. Der „Dunklhof“ aus dem frühen 16. Jahrhundert ist einer der schönsten und intimsten Höfe der Stadt. Im Sommer ist er stimmungsvoller Rahmen für Serenaden. The “Dunklhof" from the early 16th Century is one of the most beautiful and intimately scaled court- yards of the City — in summer it serves as an inspiring backdrop for open-air serenades. 10 Einzigartig in Mitteleuropa ist das Museum Arbeitswelt, in dem der Weg des arbeitenden Menschen vom Handwerk in die Industriegesellschaft dargestellt wird. Industrialisierung wird hier nicht nur aus dem Blickwinkel der Wirtschaft erklärt, sondern es werden auch die soziale Situation der Arbeitnehmer, der Alltag in Beruf und Freizeit sowie die gesellschaftlichen Zusammenhänge aufgezeigt. Der Besucher wird aktiv in das Ausstellungsgeschehen eingebunden. Unique in Central Europe is the recently installed Museum of Industrial Work, which illustrates the develop- ment of the worker away from handicraft into modern industry. Industrialization is explained not only from the view of economics, but also out of the social conditions of the industrial worker, his every-day life at work and at leisure, and his social cir- cumstances are exemplified. Walking past, and among, the exhibits, the visitor acti- vely becomes part of the exhibition scenery. Lamberg Palace is the crowning glory of the old town of Steyr. This palace was built in the 18th Century, on the foun- dations of the "Styraburg“ castle, known to have existed here over a thousand years ago.
