Eisenhandel im vorindustriellen Steyr

- 2 - Abstract Von 1707 bis 1888 betrieb die Familie Koller ein Eisenwaren-Großhandelsgeschäft in der „Ei- senstadt“ Steyr. Von ihrem Kontor am Stadtplatz aus steuerte sie die Vermarktung der in der Region von Kleinhandwerkern/-innen hergestellten Eisenwaren auf überregionalen Absatz- märkten. Der ausgedehnte Handel ließ eine Masse an Geschäftsunterlagen anwachsen, wovon ein Teil bis heute im Stadtarchiv Steyr aufbewahrt wird. Angesichts der Bedeutung des Fami- lienzyklus für die Unternehmensentwicklung bildet die Familiengeschichte den Rahmen für die Fallstudie, bei der einerseits die Handelspraktiken städtischer Kaufleute und ihre Produkte in vorindustrieller Zeit im Mittelpunkt stehen, andererseits wird eine Annäherung an den Lebens- standard der Kaufleutefamilie im Sinne der neueren Konsumforschung unternommen. Die Stu- die ist sowohl als Beitrag zur Wirtschafts- und Sozialgeschichte städtischer Handelsunterneh- men im 18. und 19. Jahrhundert als auch als Beitrag zur Stadtgeschichte Steyrs konzipiert. From 1707 to 1888, the merchant family Koller operated an ironmonger company in the ”Ei- senstadt” (“iron town”) of Steyr. Situated on the main town square, they managed the market- ing of ironmongery produced in the region by small-scale craftsmen and -women on regional and supra-regional markets. The intensive business activities produced a large bulk of docu- ments, of which a part is still preserved in the Steyr city archives. Given the importance of the family cycle for the company’s history, family history provides the guiding line for the case study, which also focuses on the commercial practice of urban merchants during the 18 th and 19 th century. Recent consumption history provides the framework for researching the daily life of the merchant family and the family’s standard of living. The business history of the Koller company can be seen as representative for the pre-industrial ironmongers in Steyr; and it is on the one hand a contribution to the economic and social history of commercial companies in the 18 th and 19 th century, and on the other hand a contribution to the history of the city of Steyr.
