Retz!, Helmut: Steyr-Münichholz - A city-district in cou rse of time (A h istorical sociologial study) I n the t rend of expanding the arms indust ry of National Socialism the factory settlement of the Steyr-Werke »Münichholz« came i nto being in the year 1 939. With this model project a new standard was applied which shows interesting details even for today's town-planning. For example the g reat social housing estates of Vienna's municipal ity in the Fi rst Republik do not reach the dimension of Münichholz. The originally planned extension of the settlement could not be realized because of the war-events whereby especially in the years after the war problems arose in many domains. Since the end of the war the main concerns of the inhabitants of this city-district may be essentially reduced to two domains: 1) the question of place of employment 2) the question of housing rent Since the year 1 95 1 the population decreased by ca. 1 000 inhabitants per decade. Because of the present development of old age structure and the al ready lowest limit of size of household per flat a constant g rowing of the population must be expected for the future. The pictu re of this c ity-district will be changed radically du ring the next years by the moving in of predominantly young families. These changes will yield an alteration in sparetime-behaviour, consumer behaviou r and cultural interests. This essay shall afford an insight into definite areas of life in the city-district and into social scientific analysis from the h istoric development to the present time, and offer help for local political decisions and prevent wrong conlusions. 1 91
