STEYR, AUSTRIA is tht• second lMgest city of the con- federate country of Upper Austria. The re is no other town in Austria which has so many picturesque and impressive buildings of Gothic and Baroque Style . On the hill overlooking the con- fluence of the two rivers, the Enns and the Steyr, towers the ancient castle, Schloss Lamberg, once birth- place and residence of the counts and margraves of Steyr and of the first duke of Steyr. The lower banks of the two rivers are the most ancient parts of the town. ln the market-square are many build- ings from the 15th, 16th and 17th cen- turies. Many beautiful gothic court- yards are another attraction. On the higher embankments of the river spread the modern districts of the town as well as the industrial plants of the Steyr-Works (manufacturers of motor-lorries, motor-cars, busses, trac- tors, ball-bearings, and shooting-guns). Another factory, the Hack-Works, pro- duces all kind of cuttlery, and it is one of the leading enterprises of this type. As a consequence of the second World War, many skilled workers from Bohemia settled down and estab- lished new industries, producing glass chandeliers and " Gablonz " jewelry. In the South, East and West the town is surrounded by the rocky mountains of the Alps, and it nestles in beautiful , cultivated and wooded foothills, while in the North beautiful fruitgrowing foothills slope into a wide open plain towards the Danube river. Steyr is also a base for extensive and satisfying alpinistic excursions, skiing and a variety of wintersports . Canoeing is exercised in the wild rushing waters of the Enns and Steyr rivers ; sailing and fishing on the damed-up Enns river in and near the town is also enjoved. Stadt1sdles Museum
