April Idee: Reinhold Rebhandl Konzept und Auswahl: Reinhold Rebhandl und Walter Ebenhofer Elisabeth Bachhuber, Düsseldorf Hide Nasu, Frankfurt am Main Dorothy lannone, Berlin Jai Young Park, München Craw Böckler, Köln Nelly Rudin,Zürich Ursula Stingelin, Basel Nakis Panayotidis, Bern Claudio Adami,Roma Anna Maria Giraudo,Torino Vincenco Cabiati, Milano Ferruccio Card,Venezia Bojan Gorenec, Ljubijana Michal Gabriel, Praha Läszio Feher, Budapest Milos Urbäsek, Bratislava Grundlage der Auswahl der Künst lerinnen und Künstler für dieses Pro jekt bildeten die Künstlerlisten des „Art Diary International 95/96" und die Tatsache, dass die Zahl der„un bekannten" Künstlerinnen, also jener, deren Namen nicht geläufig er schienen-dieses Bild hat sich durch das Projekt für alle Beteiligten verän dert- und denen somit keine künst lerische Arbeitzugeordnet werden konnte, mit der geographischen Entfernung stark zunahm,ein gro ßer Teil der im Art Diary angeführ ten Künstlerinnen uns demnach gänzlich unbekannt war. Die Städte wurden nach geo graphischen Gesichtspunkten - sie mussten in an Österreich grenzen den Ländern liegen-und ihrer Bedeutung im Kunstbetrieb aus gewählt, wobei jedes Land mit mindestens einer Stadt vertreten sein musste. Von den Künstlerinnen wurden nun alle uns bekannten Namen aus geschieden. Aus den verbleibenden Künstlerinnen wählten dann die von uns eingeladenen „Kuratorin nen", alles Personen mit Bedeutung im österreichischen und internatio nalen Kunstbetrieb, aus der ihnen jeweils zugesandten Künstlerliste einer bestimmten Stadt fünf ihnen nicht bekannte Künstlerinnen aus, wobei die Vorgangsweise den ein zelnen „Kuratorinnen" überlassen war. A large percentage of the artists listed in the Art Diary were thus wholly unknown to us. The eitles were chosen on geographical grounds —they had to be in countries bordering Austria— and for their irnportance in the art ti ade, with every country being represenled by at least one city. We then exciuded all names familiar to us. "Curators" invited by us-all people of irnportance in tiie Auslrian and international art business— then selected five artists unknown to them from the remaining artists,from the lists of artists of a particular city that we sent them.How they did it was left to the individual "curators". Subsequently we got in touch with the artists selected and invited them to join the project, with each city being represented only by one artist. The communicative centre of the project was the Kunslhalle.tmpSteyr,The focus was on presenting Information about the work of individual artists rather than Originals. Sixteen rickety decorating tabies measuring 60x300cm (2'x10')were set up in the unrenovated 13,000sq.ft(1,228m0 factory Shop, which was lit from above by a light bulb.Temporary "display Windows" were instalied on tfie tabies, which were arrayed with the Infor mation material and biographical details sent by the participants. Parts of the walls were also used, which provided room for large name signs, mean-
