Blick nach vorne A landmark of Linz is the pilgrimage basilica on the Pöstlingberg in honour of the Seven Rains of the Virgin Mary. The pilgrimage wasfounded by the pious and simple layman F. Obermayr, the church built with donations of the Citizens of Linz and Count Starhemberg; in 1785 under Emperor Joseph II it became a parish. Ü.M. Krinner built the main tract betweeen 1742-1748; the interior was completed during the second half of the 18th Century. The narrow high double-towered facade with tower domes by R. Jeblinger (1891/1892) is set before a central construction which Combines in its ground-plan a Latin Cross with a high cupola. The walls are covered with rieh rococo stucco decorations; the frescoes are unfortunately no longer the original ones but were painted by A. Groll 1899/1900. On the High Altar we find the Miraculous Image, a Pieta by I. Jobst, 1716. Pulpit and side altars (with paintinqs.by A. Hitzenthaler, 1819 and 1831) are of the second half of the 18th centuty. In the vestry we see a fragment of a fresco ,,Baptism of Christ", probably by Ph. Mayr, who is mentioned besides A. Hitzenthaler as fresco painter in the church. The organ in a setting of R. Wirth was made by M. Mauracher in 1941-1943. After a devastating fire in 1963, which destroyed the northern tower and the roof, the church was completely restored after the thorough restoration under the Oblates of St. Francis of Sales and thanks to generous donations. By an Apostolic Breve of the Holy Father, Pope Paul VI,the pilgrimage and parish church was granted the Status of a Basilica Minor on July llth 1964. Blick nach hinten 1 %•: -.. ;• ifc f
