56 #sprachenvielfalt Ciao! My name is Cayley Frank and I was the English teaching assistant here at the HAK for the 2020-2021 school year. I am originally from Altadena, California which is a city just outside of Los Angeles. After graduating from an all-girls Catholic high school, I moved to Portland, Oregon, where I began studying Business Administration at the University of Portland. During my second year at my university, in the 2016-2017 school year, I was fortunate enough to study abroad in Salzburg, Austria. I thoroughly enjoyed my experience there; I was fascinated to live in a foreign country and to become acquainted with a new culture. My year abroad inspired me to continue my German studies. I graduated from the University of Portland in May 2019 with a Bachelor of Business Administration with an emphasis in Operations and Technology Management and a minor in German. Following my graduation, I worked at Adidas’ North American headquarters in Portland, Oregon, which was just a 10-minute car ride from my university. During my last year of university, I had a part-time internship with Adidas in the finance department, but following my graduation I found a full-time position in supply chain management (logistics). While I enjoyed working at Adidas, I could never stop thinking about my experience abroad in Salzburg. I knew I wanted to return to Austria to continue to get to know the culture better as well as improve my German. Additionally, I have Austrian relatives, who I have wanted to get to know better. These were all factors which inspired me to apply for an English teaching assistant program in Austria and is ultimately how I arrived here in Steyr. I would say my goals of getting to know Austrian culture better and improving my German were mostly successful this year. Of course, COVID-19 posed additional challenges for me to meet these goals, just as it has for everyone. Despite the pandemic, I was able to spend time with my Austrian relatives and enjoyed experiencing an Austrian Christmas with them. I also enjoyed getting to know the students and teachers here at the HAK! Although I would say my German improved, the dialect here made it quite difficult to make progress – but I also think that is the beauty of languages! I lived in Steyr during the year and the weeks that I was not at the HAK, I worked with the students at the HLW in Weyer. Although I taught the students about U.S. culture, I also had the pleasure to learn more about Austrian culture during our classes. I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to work at this school and I will always cherish this experience. Thank you for allowing me to spend time in your classes this year and share about my experiences as a U.S. American. Bonjour!
