Schulimpressionen unserer Fremdsprachenassistentinnen! Wlien I was informed last June that I was to take up the position of an English Language Assistant in Steyr, I was quite anxious as it would be my first time away from home for so long, but thankfully all my worries wäre in vain. When I first arrived I received a warm welcome and much help for wliich I am grateful. Having been taught only „Hoch Deutsch" in Ireland I found myself unterstanding no „Austrian German" when left to fend for myself, as can be seen when I first came to Steyr. I travelled from Vienna to Linz - changed trains - from Linz to St. Valentin changed trains again with all my luggage for a year in Austria and eventually arrived in Steyr amid a mass of confusion - why weren't people speaking the German I knew ? This language problem continued on for a few weeks and all the time I was told, „Another few weeks und you'll understand everything" - I'm still waiting - the German may not improve but the dialect will I'm told. Then it was time to Start working. As I had always been interested in teaching I was delighted at the prospect of working in a classroom here until I went into the class — I looked around and suddenly found myself at the top of the class when I was used sitting behind the desks, but thankfully all went well and the pupils have been very helpful and friendly - I've enjoyed our „cups of coffee" together! Well then ist was time to hit the tourist trail and see the sights of Austria. Vienna really interested me with its various museums, old buildings, castles and of course we had to hear the world famous „Vienna Boys Ghoir" - they were fantastic. Salzburg then is a beautiful city, set at the foot of the mountains it looks lovely with its narrow streets and friendly atmosphere. However, not only did I see Austria, but also Germany and Hungary where the crack was good dealing with people who spoke no German or English - typical, but good fun! I am thankful to my year in Austria for the experience of visiting these
